Personal Training After an Injury: 10 Things to Know to Get Back to Exercise Safely

Afraid your knee, shoulder, hip, or back pain means you can’t work out anymore? Scared of further injury? Here’s how we help people throughout Murrieta and Temecula rebuild confidence, strength, and the ability to do the things they love.

If you’re looking for a personal trainer in Murrieta or Temecula after an injury, you’re not alone. Almost every day, we meet someone who says something like:

“I used to work out all the time… until I hurt my back.”

“I’d love to lose weight, but I’m afraid my knee will get worse.”

“My doctor told me I need to exercise. I just don’t know what’s safe anymore.”

These conversations are incredibly common. What’s interesting is that people usually don’t come to us because of the injury itself. They come because the injury slowly started affecting everything else. They stopped exercising, hiking, golfing, playing pickleball. They stopped chasing their kids or grandkids around the yard. They gained weight. They lost confidence.

Eventually they started telling themselves, “I guess this is just part of getting older.” In many cases, it isn’t. The injury may have started the process, but it’s often the fear of moving again that keeps people stuck.

At Progressive Health & Performance, we’ve spent more than 13 years helping adults throughout Murrieta, Temecula, Menifee, Wildomar, Lake Elsinore, and the surrounding communities safely return to exercise after injuries. Our goal isn’t simply to help people work out again.

It’s to help them trust their body again.

Quick Answer: Can You Exercise After an Injury?

In many cases, yes.

Having an injury doesn’t automatically mean you should stop exercising. It usually means your approach needs to change. The safest path is rarely doing nothing, and it’s rarely pushing through pain without a plan. Instead, the goal is to understand what your body is telling you, identify what movements are appropriate today, and gradually rebuild strength, mobility, and confidence through individualized coaching.

That’s exactly what we help people do every day through our personalized semi-private personal training programs in Murrieta.

The Biggest Mistake People Make After an Injury

The biggest mistake we see isn’t doing too much. It’s doing too little.

After an injury, it’s completely normal to become protective. Most people stop exercising, avoid movements that feel uncertain, and hope that enough time will solve the problem.

Sometimes rest is necessary in the early stages of an injury, but eventually, avoiding movement becomes the bigger problem. When you stop moving, your body doesn’t just lose pain. It also loses strength, mobility, coordination, endurance, and confidence.

Weeks turn into months. Months turn into years.

Before long, you’re not just recovering from an injury anymore. You’re trying to recover from months or years of inactivity. That’s why our philosophy has always been to take an active approach instead of a passive one.

Rest Is Important. But Rest Isn’t the Whole Plan.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is: “I guess I just need to rest.”

Sometimes that’s true, but rest alone is rarely the complete recovery plan. Eventually your body needs movement again.

The question isn’t: “Should I exercise?”

The better question is: “What exercises can I safely do today?”

That simple shift changes everything. Instead of focusing on what you can’t do, you begin building from what your body can do. That’s where real progress starts.

Pain Is Information

This is one of the biggest philosophies we coach by at Progressive Health & Performance. Pain is information. It isn’t automatically good, but it isn’t automatically bad. It’s simply your body’s way of communicating something.

Sometimes discomfort is expected when you’re rebuilding strength, improving mobility, or exposing your body to movements it hasn’t done in years. Other times, pain tells us we need to change something. Maybe we modify the exercise, reduce the range of motion, decrease the weight or maybe we choose a completely different movement.

Knowing the difference is where coaching matters. One of the biggest misconceptions in the fitness industry is that you either must push through pain or avoid movement altogether. Neither approach is usually the answer.

A knowledgeable coach learns what your body is communicating and adjusts your training accordingly.

The Goal Doesn’t Change. The Strategy Does.

One of the first things we tell clients is this: An injury shouldn’t stop your progress. It should change your strategy.

Let’s say squatting hurts your knee. That doesn’t automatically mean strength training is over. Maybe we use a different squat variation, shorten the range of motion, improve hip mobility first, the destination hasn’t changed. We’ve simply chosen a different route to get there. That’s what individualized personal training should look like.

Every Injury Has a Different Story

One of the first questions we ask isn’t simply: “Where does it hurt?”

We also want to know:

  • When does it hurt?
  • What does it feel like?
  • What movements make it worse?
  • What movements feel okay?
  • Has it been evaluated?
  • What have you already tried?

Those answers matter. Two people can both have shoulder pain and need completely different plans. The same is true for knee pain, back pain, hip pain, neck pain, plantar fasciitis, or recovery after surgery.

That’s why cookie-cutter workouts rarely work well. The plan has to fit the person—not the diagnosis.

How We Approach Personal Training After an Injury

Everything at PHP starts with understanding the individual.

Before anyone begins personal training, we start with a complimentary Discovery Session to learn about your goals, injury history, lifestyle, previous treatments, and what you’re hoping to get back to.

From there, we complete a movement Assessment.

Our coaches use evidence-informed systems influenced by Functional Movement Systems (FMS), Functional Range Conditioning (FRC), and Z-Health principles to evaluate movement quality, mobility, stability, motor control, and how your nervous system responds to movement.

We’re not looking for a perfect score. We’re looking for information. Better information leads to better decisions.

That assessment helps us answer questions like:

  • What movements should we avoid right now?
  • What movements can we safely build confidence with?
  • Where are the biggest opportunities to improve?
  • What strengths can we build upon?
  • How do we keep this person progressing while reducing unnecessary risk?

That becomes the blueprint for your individualized personal training program.

Who We Commonly Help

Many of our clients come to us after they’ve been told to “exercise more,” but nobody explained what that should actually look like.

We commonly work with people who:

  • Have finished physical therapy but don’t feel confident returning to the gym.
  • Have chronic knee, shoulder, hip, or back pain.
  • Are recovering from surgery.
  • Want to lose weight without making an injury worse.
  • Feel intimidated by traditional gyms.
  • Have tried working out on their own but don’t know what’s safe anymore.
  • Want to become stronger than they were before the injury.

If that sounds like you, you’re exactly the type of person we designed PHP for.

We Believe in Active Recovery

Active recovery doesn’t mean ignoring an injury. It means finding productive ways to keep moving. For one person, that may mean reducing weight. For another, it may mean improving mobility.

Someone else may need stability work, motor control exercises, or strength training that supports the injured area without aggravating it. Sometimes we’re working around the painful area. Sometimes we’re improving the joints and muscles that contribute to the problem. The point is that progress doesn’t have to stop because one area hurts.

A good plan adapts.

We’re Partners With Physical Therapists—Not Replacements

People sometimes ask whether we’re trying to replace physical therapy. Not at all.

In fact, we work closely with physical therapists and physicians throughout the Murrieta and Temecula area whenever appropriate. We actually have one that operates out of PHP – Rise and Reframe Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is excellent at helping people recover from injury and return to daily function. Our role often begins where physical therapy ends. We help people transition from function back to performance. Back to hiking, golf, pickleball, lifting confidently. Back to traveling without worrying about pain. Back to feeling capable again.

If something falls outside our scope or raises concerns during an assessment, we’ll gladly refer someone to one of our trusted physical therapy partners before beginning training.

Your health always comes first.

You’re Not the Only One

One client came to us after knee surgery thinking they simply needed to get back into the gym and everything would fall into place.

Instead, our movement assessment uncovered several movement imbalances that likely contributed to the injury in the first place. Having an individualized program—not just another workout—completely changed how they approached recovery.

Another client shared this in a Google review:

“They are experts in making modifications when needed so I still get a good workout.”

That’s exactly what we’re trying to accomplish, because life doesn’t stop when you have an injury. Your progress shouldn’t have to stop either.

Success Isn’t Just Being Pain-Free

When people first come to us, they usually say they want the pain to go away. A few months later, they’re talking about something completely different. They’re excited because they hiked on vacation. They played 18 holes of golf without thinking about their back. They carried their grandkids, got back on the pickleball court, started doing things they had avoided for years. To us, that’s real success. Not just returning to where you were before the injury, but doing more than you thought you could.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work with a personal trainer if I have knee pain?

Yes, in many cases. At Progressive Health & Performance, we modify exercises based on your movement assessment, goals, and how your knee responds to different movements.

Is personal training safe after an injury?

It can be, when the program is individualized. Every client at PHP begins with a Discovery Session and Assessment before starting a personalized training plan.

What’s the difference between physical therapy and personal training?

Physical therapy focuses on helping you recover from injury and restore function. Personal training focuses on building strength, confidence, fitness, and long-term health after you’re ready to return to exercise.

Can I exercise with back pain?

Many people with back pain can safely exercise, but the right approach depends on the cause of the pain and how your body moves. That’s why an assessment is so important.
